Corey Adler is a professor of sociology and women’s studies at Leeward Community College.
Teaching more than 40 courses, which reached more than 1,300 students, she is an excellent example of an instructor who brings her best self to each and every class. Adler values and is committed to each and every student.
She passionately believes that the classroom must be an intellectually safe place for students to explore new ideas, learn new skills and engage in critical dialogue. While Adler works to make the classroom a safe space for students, she also ensures academic rigor in all of her courses. She spends time impressing upon her students to think sociologically, to examine the cross-disciplinary field of women’s studies, and to see how each discipline is grounded in both theory and practice.
A peer review states, “Inspiring and energetic, the instructor obviously has great passion and enthusiasm for the subject matter. It was quite evident that her class session required much thoughtful preparation. Rarely have I ever seen such a dynamic presentation in a college course”
The Frances Davis Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching recognizes dedication and demonstrated excellence as teachers of undergraduate students. It was established as a memorial to the late Frances Davis, who taught mathematics at Leeward Community College and 51²è¹Ý Manoa for 19 years.
