Mini-Conference and Conversation on Mindanao

April 19, 4:00pm - 6:00pm
Mānoa Campus, Center for Korean Studies Auditorium

Dr. Marilou S. Nanaman and Dr. Sulpecia Ponce, both from MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology, will present lectures on the 5-month war in Marawi City, on Mindanao island, Philippines during the summer of 2017. There, government troops battled ISIS-inspired Islamist groups, resulting in hundreds of deaths and massive displacement of civilian population. They will discuss what happened, why did the militants chose Marawi City, how much it will cost government to reconstruct or rehabilitate the city and its residents, and whether this incident can be prevented in the future. Watch out for two events:

Conversation on Mindanao: April 19, 2018, 4:00 - 6:00 pm, Philippine Consulate General in Honolulu, Pali Highway.
