“Emplacing East Timor: Regime Change and Knowledge Production, 1860–2010

April 16, 3:00pm - 4:30pm
Mānoa Campus, Online

In this captivating book talk, Dr. Kisho Tsuchiya will present his thought-provoking research on the complex history of East Timor, focusing on the intersection of regime change and knowledge production from 1860 to 2010. Emplacing East Timor delves into the ways in which colonial, revolutionary, and post-independence regimes have shaped both the physical and intellectual landscapes of East Timor. Dr. Tsuchiya will explore how the process of regime change—from Portuguese colonial rule to Indonesian occupation and finally to independence—has influenced the production and dissemination of knowledge about the region. Central to his work is the role that different forms of knowledge—academic, political, cultural, and local—have played in constructing East Timor's identity and history. The talk will also discuss how these knowledge systems have been mobilized to assert national sovereignty, resist occupation, and navigate the complex realities of post-colonial statehood.
