November 21, 12:00pm - 1:15pm
Mānoa Campus, Biomed B-104 & Zoom

The Center for Biographical Research presents: /“Narrative self-construction in autobiographical comics” / Zuzana Fonioková, Assistant Professor, Department of Czech Literature, Masaryk University, Brno, Czech Republic / In this talk Dr Fonioková will focus on the specific means of self-representation the medium of comics has to offer. Bringing together comics analysis, autobiography studies, and narrative theory, she will explore different ways in which graphic life narratives expose the illusion of a stable and unified autobiographical subject, foregrounding the view of self as a discursive and performative construct. In the final part of the talk, she will analyze Katie Green’s graphic memoir Lighter than My Shadow (2013), which enacts narrative self-construction as an interpretative and meaning-making process that can facilitate healing./ Zuzana Fonioková is Assistant Professor at the Department of Czech Literature, Masaryk University, Brno, Czech Republic. Her research interests include narrative theory, autobiography, autofiction, and autobiographical comics. She is author of Kazuo Ishiguro and Max Frisch: Bending Facts in Unreliable and Unnatural Narration (2015); more recent publications include articles on narrative point of view in life writing, narrative strategies of self-construction, and the theory and practice of autofiction. / Cosponsored by Hamilton Library, the Hawaiʻinuiākea School of Hawaiian Knowledge, the Matsunaga Institute, Conflict and Peace Specialist, the School of Communication & Information, and the Departments of American Studies, English, Ethnic Studies, and Sociology / Tuesday, November 21 / Biomed B-104 & Zoom / 12PM to 1:15PM HST / https://hawaii.zoom.us/j/95425142193 / 954 2514 2193 / 594077
