Abstract
Considering your career after the PhD? One of the most difficult decisions for any PhD student is whether or not to pursue a research career in academia. In order to make this decision, you first need to understand what other alternative careers for STEM PhD students exist. The job landscape has been dramatically changed, whereas only small proportion of PhD/Postdocs are able to land a tenure-track faculty position. The paradigm shift from just pursuing academic research after PhD to the lens that magnifies non-academic opportunities has to occur early in graduate studies. Unfortunately, for many PhD students and even postdoctoral fellows this reality was not revealed or they refused to accept it, missing opportunities to obtain valuable skills that could usher them into their career. For PhD students who want to follow an alternative career path, there are surprising number of options. Anna (Anushka) Babakhanyan will be presenting her career path as an example of alternative career opportunities. Anushka received her Master’s degree in Biotechnology (SJSU) and Ph.D. in Tropical Medicine (51²è¹İM). She worked in the biotech sector and later conducted global health research in the United States and abroad. Currently, she serves as a science research advisor.
