2018 Words on Music Public Lecture featuring Dr. Ellen Koskoff
April 11, 4:30pm - 5:30pmMānoa Campus, Queen Liliuokalani Center Room 411
The Ethnomusicology Association (EMA) at the University of HawaiÊ»i at MÄÂnoa is proud to announce Dr. Ellen Koskoff, Professor Emerita of Ethnomusicology at the Eastman School of Music, as our 2018 Words on Music speaker. Dr. Koskoff will be presenting a public lecture titled "My Music."
Dr. Koskoff writes: In this time of political, social, and disciplinary contention and competition, I wish to explore an important link that can bind us together--no matter our gender, race, age, musical tastes, or political leanings. That link is music, and the magical feeling of becoming the music as we listen and experience the musics we love. In this talk, I examine certain pieces of music that have been important to me over the course of my life, musics that have led me into meaningful personal and professional directions, with the hope that it will trigger memories of "your music" and the enchantment this gift brings to our lives.
Dr. Koskoff received a Ph.D. in musicology/ethnomusicology from the University of Pittsburgh, initiating the study that would eventually emerge as Music in Lubavitcher Life (2000). Her M.A. in vocal and piano pedagogy from Columbia University was preceded by a bachelor’s degree in the same from Boston University. In addition to numerous articles and book chapters, Koskoff is the author of Music in the United States: An Introduction (2005), and the editor of The United States and Canada, volume 3 of the Garland Encyclopedia of World Music (2001).
