November 21, 7:30pm - 10:00pm
Mānoa Campus, Barbara Smith Amphitheater

The 51²è¹ÝM Music Department and the Hawaii Gamelan Society present the 51²è¹Ý Javanese Gamelan Ensemble, Byron Moon, director, and the 51²è¹Ý Balinese Gamelan Ensemble, Made Widana and Annie Reynolds, directors, in a performance of traditional and contemporary gamelan music and dance. The Balinese Gamelan Ensemble will perform traditional Balinese music on two sets of instruments – the larger gamelan gong kebyar ensemble (Gamelan Segara Madu), and a smaller gender wayang ensemble. The group will also perform new compositions by ensemble director Made Widana. These new works will be used in the January 2016 51²è¹Ý Asian Theater production of a contemporary Balinese dramatic performance accompanied by the 51²è¹Ý Balinese Gamelan Ensemble. The Javanese Gamelan ensemble, using Gamelan Kyai Gandrung, will perform repertoire in the styles of various parts of Central Java – Yogyakarta, Surakarta, Semarang, and Madiun – as well as Pak Hardja Susilo’s arrangement of traditional and contemporary pieces originally used for a 1974 dance drama.
